Some Colleges Have More Students From the Top 1 Percent Than the Bottom 60.

The NYT's "The Upshot" visualized the socioeconomic distribution of students at elite colleges in the US. While colleges tend to promote the inclusion of lower SES students, most have "focused more on being affordable to low-income families than on expanding access." Danny Yagan, assistant professor of economics at UC Berkeley, states that "free tuition only helps if you can get in."

The University of Pennsylvania has more students in the Top 1% (18.7% with $630K+) than students in the Bottom 60% (16.5% with <$65K).
